In 1951 the Nordsee Deutsche Hochseefischerei AG, a German fishing company ordered two fishing trawlers at the Rickmers shipyard. These two ships were named Wuppertal and Nürnberg. The demand was that they could reach a top speed of 13 knots fully loaded. They were typical fishing trawlers of the 50s and ships like these were to be seen by the hundreds on the North Sea and off shore Iceland, Norway and Greenland. This ship design was first developed in the late 19th century and continuously improved until the 1960s.
