Hohenzollern Castle was built in the 11th century. Even then, this castle complex was considered particularly artistic and valuable. For example, it was described as the "crown of all castles in Swabia." However, at the beginning of the 15th century, it was completely destroyed. Only the St. Michael's Chapel remained intact and stands to this day in its original form.
On the foundations, a second castle was built, which was even larger and more secure. During the Thirty Years' War at the beginning of the 17th century, it served as a fortress. After the Thirty Years' War until the middle of the 18th century, the castle was first occupied by Austria, then by France. After that, it was hardly used and fell into disrepair.
In the middle of the 19th century, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the castle rebuilt and made habitable again. This resulted in one of the most impressive castles in Germany. It is built in the neo-Gothic style. Defensive structures, connected with civilian buildings, are grouped around a castle with many towers. Due to its location on the prominent summit of Mount Zoller, it is visible from afar and makes a very picturesque impression.
Inside, the former ancestral castle of the House of Hohenzollern is equipped with numerous works of art that depict the history of Prussia and the Prussian kings. These include paintings as well as silverwork from the 17th to the 19th century.
Today, Hohenzollern Castle is known as one of the most significant landmarks in Baden-Württemberg. With approximately 300,000 visitors annually, it is one of the most popular attractions.
This model kit is a reprint of a template that is over a hundred years old. According to the technology available at that time, the templates were transferred from lithographs to Solnhofen lithographic plates. Up to twelve printing plates (for each color) were required for each page. The characteristic coloring of this model kit is due to this extremely elaborate production process and gives the model its special appeal.
