Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is situated atop the entirety of Mt. Gagyu, standing at an altitude of 480 meters, and it stands out as the sole mountain castle with a preserved castle tower. Its origins trace back to 1240 when Saburo Shigenobu Akiba, a local landowner in Arikango, began its construction on Mt. Oakiyama. Throughout the tumultuous Sengoku period, it became a battleground between the Mori clan and the Amago clan. The Mori clan emerged victorious in the conflict known as the "Bicchu Heiran," which erupted between the Mimura clan, the rulers of Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, and the Mori clan. Subsequently, it is believed that the castle underwent significant modifications during the early modern era under the Mori clan's rule.
Throughout the Edo period, ownership of the castle changed hands numerous times. However, a comprehensive renovation of the early modern castle was undertaken by Katsutaka Mizutani and Katsumune from 1995 to 1999. It was during this period that the current castle tower and double turret were preserved, marking an important milestone in its architectural history.
