The castle tower that stands today at Osaka Castle is a reconstruction completed in 1931 (Showa 6) with donations from citizens.
It is the first reconstructed castle tower built in Japan since the Showa era and represents the third generation of the Osaka Castle tower. The original castle tower was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi but was destroyed by fire during the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615 (Keicho 20). Subsequently, the Tokugawa clan reclaimed the stone wall from the Toyotomi era and built a new stone wall on top of it, completing the second Tokugawa Osaka Castle in 1629 (Kanei 6). However, that castle tower was destroyed by lightning in 1665 (Kanbun 5), and the castle remained without a tower afterward.
The current third-generation Osaka Castle tower was constructed on the base of the Tokugawa-era tower, with reference to the 'Osaka Summer Battle Folding Screen.' Compared to the Toyotomi and Tokugawa era towers, which burned down relatively quickly, the Showa-era tower has been the longest-standing since its construction and was registered as a national tangible cultural property in 1997.
