Fukuchiyama Castle traces its origins back to the 8th year of Tensho (1580), when Mitsuhide Akechi, under the directive of Nobunaga Oda, seized control of Tanba and erected it as his stronghold. Initially, the castle tower stood as an independent structure, consisting solely of a large tower. Subsequently, it is believed that expansions and renovations took place, resulting in the connected design observed today, featuring a smaller tower.

The main tower, a three to four-story watchtower, distinctly exhibits the early characteristics of castle towers in its exterior architecture. Another notable feature of Fukuchiyama Castle is its employment of natural stones in the construction of its stone walls, following a technique known as Nozura-mi, incorporating a significant quantity of repurposed stones.

Throughout the Edo period, the castle served as the administrative center for the Fukuchiyama domain. However, numerous buildings were dismantled following the Meiji era's castle abolition ordinance. Nonetheless, in 1986, efforts were made to restore the castle's exterior, while the interior was repurposed into a local museum.
